Rügen in Autumn – Discover Beech Forests, Chalk Cliffs and Peaceful Days on the Beach

We show you how to safely explore this natural paradise and the famous chalk coast – and what else makes Rügen so special in September and October.

Beech Forests, Chalk Cliffs and Peaceful Days on the Beach

Herbst auf Rügen

Autumn on Rügen means long walks along the beach, fresh Baltic Sea air, rustling leaves and plenty of space for your own thoughts. In September, there are still echoes of summer. In October, autumn gradually takes centre stage, bathing the island’s forests in warm colours.

For anyone wishing to experience Rügen at its most authentic, this is the perfect time to visit. The large summer crowds begin to thin out, the temperatures are ideal for hiking and cycling, and tranquillity returns to many viewpoints.

A special highlight in 2026 is the anniversary of the ancient beech forests in Jasmund National Park: they have now been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site for 15 years. The national park is only around 20 kilometres from the AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz in Juliusruh – perfect for a day trip to one of Germany’s most impressive landscapes.

Why Is a Holiday on Rügen Worthwhile in September and October?

Autumn on Rügen combines outdoor experiences with relaxation. Sunny spells often alternate with fresh winds and brief rain showers. This very mix is part of the charm of an autumn holiday by the sea.

This is the perfect time for anyone who:

  • enjoys walking along the beach and through the forests,
  • would like to explore Rügen by bike,
  • wants to experience the chalk coast without the summer crowds,
  • is travelling with their dog,
  • is looking for peace and relaxation,
  • would like to combine wellness with physical activity,
  • enjoys deciding spontaneously what each day will bring.

September can still bring pleasantly mild days. For the more adventurous, even a swim in the Baltic Sea may still be an option. In October, the weather becomes more autumnal, but this is precisely when the clear air, powerful waves and wide beaches are particularly impressive. For a more relaxing swim, simply head to our indoor pool area.

Our tip: Pack windproof and waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear and several light layers. The weather on the coast can change quickly – but the sun can reappear just as quickly after a rain shower.

15 Years of UNESCO World Heritage: The Ancient Beech Forests of Jasmund National Park

Buchenwald jasmund

Since 2011, 493 hectares of ancient beech forests in Jasmund National Park have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2026, the national park celebrates the 15th anniversary of this designation. The pristine forests stretch across hills, stream valleys, moors and springs. Some areas are largely left untouched, allowing nature to take its course. Ancient trees, deadwood, fungi, ferns and rare animals form a natural habitat that is constantly evolving.

The forest is particularly captivating in autumn. Light filters through yellow and golden leaves, the ground is scented with damp foliage, and glimpses of the Baltic Sea repeatedly open up between the tree trunks.

Jasmund National Park may be Germany’s smallest national park, but its landscape offers one of Rügen’s greatest natural experiences.

How Can You Explore the Chalk Coast Safely?

The chalk coast is a constantly changing landscape. Wind, waves, frost and rain continually reshape the cliffs. Rockfalls are part of the coast’s natural development and can occur at any time. In March and August 2026, further major rockfalls occurred along the cliffs. The national park therefore expressly advises visitors not to leave the marked paths.

Follow these simple rules for a safe excursion:

  • Stay on the signposted hiking trails.
  • Use the official viewpoints.
  • Keep a safe distance from the cliff edge.
  • Do not climb on the chalk slopes or piles of fallen debris.
  • Observe all closures and current safety information.
  • Avoid narrow stretches of beach directly below the cliffs.
  • Plan your hikes during daylight hours whenever possible.
  • Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear.

The Skywalk Königsstuhl offers the most famous view of the chalk coast. The accessible viewing platform appears to extend beyond the chalk cliffs, offering sweeping views across the Baltic Sea. The KÖNIGSSTUHL National Park Centre is around 18 to 20 kilometres from the AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz. This makes Königsstuhl an excellent destination for a half-day or full-day excursion.

The Most Beautiful Walks Through Jasmund National Park

Around Königsstuhl

A visit to the KÖNIGSSTUHL National Park Centre is a great place to start. In addition to the Skywalk, it offers an interactive exhibition, a changing programme of events and various options for shorter walks.

This option is also suitable for guests who do not wish to undertake a long hike.

Hike from Sassnitz to Königsstuhl

The hike from Sassnitz through the national park to Königsstuhl is one of Rügen’s best-known routes. The guided chalk coast hike is approximately eight kilometres long and takes several hours, including explanations and breaks.

A good level of fitness, sure-footedness and sturdy footwear are required. If you do not wish to walk the same route back, you should plan your return journey in advance.

Forest Bathing and Guided Nature Experiences

The National Park Centre also offers guided hikes, family activities and forest bathing. These experiences are less about speed or distance and more about consciously connecting with the forest.

Sounds, scents, colours and the varied textures beneath your feet turn the beech forest into an experience for all the senses. Please check current dates directly with the National Park Centre before your visit.

Autumn Days Around Juliusruh

Not every beautiful autumn day requires a major excursion. The AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz is located directly behind the dunes on Juliusruh’s long sandy beach. Beach walks, short hikes and cycling tours begin just a few steps from the hotel.

A Walk Along Schaabe Beach

The Schaabe connects the Wittow and Jasmund peninsulas. Its kilometres-long sandy beach offers plenty of space and uninterrupted views across the Baltic Sea. In autumn, you can experience powerful waves, fast-moving clouds and stretches of beach that are sometimes almost deserted.

A Walk to Breege

The picturesque village of Breege is just over one kilometre from the AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz. Its small harbour and traditional houses provide an attractive contrast to the Baltic Sea beach at Juliusruh.

An Excursion to Cape Arkona

Cape Arkona is around ten kilometres from the AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz. You can make the journey by bike or bus, or walk part of the route.

One particularly beautiful option is to travel towards Putgarten first and then walk to Cape Arkona and the listed fishing village of Vitt. Here, too, please observe all closures and current safety information along the cliffs.

Crane Watching on Rügen

Thousands of cranes migrate through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in autumn. They rest on fields and in the shallow waters of the Bodden lagoons before continuing their journey south. Particularly good viewing opportunities can be found in the Bodden landscapes in western and south-western Rügen and around the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. You may also spot cranes on harvested fields while travelling across the island.

It is important to keep a sufficient distance. Stay on public paths and use binoculars whenever possible. Disturbing resting cranes causes them to use valuable energy that they need for their long onward journey. Find out more about crane watching.

What Can You Do on Rügen When It Rains?

A rainy day on Rügen is not a wasted holiday. Showers often pass quickly along the coast, and the island also offers numerous attractions that can be enjoyed whatever the weather.

These include:

  • the KÖNIGSSTUHL National Park Centre,
  • the Chalk Museum in Gummanz,
  • the OZEANEUM in Stralsund,
  • the Rügen Natural Heritage Centre in Prora,
  • museums and exhibitions in Sassnitz, Binz and Bergen,
  • a journey on the Rasender Roland heritage railway,
  • cafés and small farm shops across the island.

Alternatively, simply stay at the AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz. After a walk in the Baltic Sea breeze, you can enjoy the swimming pool, sauna area and fitness centre. A grey autumn day can quickly become a relaxing wellness day.

Is Rügen Suitable for a Holiday With Your Dog in Autumn?

Autumn is an especially enjoyable time to visit Rügen with your dog. Temperatures are more comfortable than in midsummer, making long walks more relaxing for both you and your four-legged companion. Outside the peak season, dogs are permitted on more beaches. However, dates and local regulations may vary, so please always observe the current signs.

Dogs must be kept on a lead in forests, national parks and nature reserves. This helps protect wildlife, resting birds and sensitive habitats.

Guests travelling with dogs are also warmly welcomed at the AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz. Its location directly by the beach and the many walking trails around Juliusruh provide ideal conditions for a wonderful holiday together.

A Perfect Autumn Day at the AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz

Begin your morning with a leisurely breakfast. Afterwards, set off on a hike through Jasmund National Park or enjoy a walk along Juliusruh beach. In the afternoon, warm up in the sauna, swim a few lengths or simply relax with a good book. In the evening, enjoy the buffet in the restaurant with our half-board plus package, including selected drinks.

This is what makes an autumn holiday at the AQUAMARIS so special: everything is possible, but nothing is compulsory. Each day, you can decide whether you feel like an excursion, some exercise, a wellness experience or simply peace and quiet.
